A Avatar 2 set photo shows a sneak peek at a new underwater ship. Upon its release in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar was a box office smash and technical marvel. It went on to win three Oscars, and Cameron announced his intention to continue the story with a number of sequels. However, due to the amount of visual effects required and the Disney-Fox deal, the release dates for the sequels have been pushed back several times. As things stand now, Avatar 2 will be released in December 2021, with the fifth and (currently) final film hitting theaters in 2027.
Very few details about the Avatar sequels are known aside from the fact that they will see the return of characters from the first film. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver have all been confirmed to appear. Newcomers to the franchise include Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, and Edie Falco.
Live-action production on the film has wrapped for the year, and the official Avatar Twitter account offered a look at what they’ve been working on. The picture depicts a water tank and the “aft well deck section” of a new ship called the Sea Dragon. The Sea Dragon is said to be a “massive mothership that carries an array of other sea-going craft in the sequels.” Check out the Tweet and picture below:
Due to the angle and positioning of the picture, not many details can be picked up about the Sea Dragon. Considering its status as a mothership, it can be assumed the Sea Dragon will be much bigger when seen on screen, possibly to be enhanced by using CGI. However, its initial creation as a practical set is cool, especially considering how often big-budget films rely on entirely-CGI sets. Cameron is best known for his incredible visuals, and Avatar 2 will certainly have those in abundance.
Avatar 2 is still a long way off, but plot details will likely start to emerge within the next year. Public opinion towards the Avatar franchise is divided, with some people expressing excitement and others wondering why it needs five films at all. This certainly seems to be in the minds of those working on the film. The real question is how audiences will respond to a sequel being released 12 years after the first installment. The publicity department for the franchise is smart to show little glimpses of Avatar 2 this far in advance to hype it up, but things won’t get clearer until the first trailer is unveiled, and that probably won’t be for a long while. Until then, fans eager to return to Pandora in Avatar 2 just have to keep their eyes peeled for more behind the scenes looks.
