The direct sequel Assassin’s Creed: Origins has seemingly been leaked with the title, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Assassin’s Creed: Origins represented a new era for the franchise, even though it returned to the distant past, with all-new combat system, a much more open world structure and a protagonist who wasn’t a boring blank slate of a human being.
Origins was very well received, mainly because Ubisoft gave the team an extra year to work on it, moving away from the franchise’s usual new release per year schedule. Now though it seems like Ubisoft is returning back to that year model with the brand-new game, Odyssey. Details are scarce but the rumor is that Odyssey will directly continue the story of Bayek of Siwa and the formation of the titular creed.
The leak of the Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey came from French site, Jeuxvideo. The site somehow got their hands on a keychain that is a part of the merchandising for Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which drops some heavy hints about the game’s location. The key chain for Odyssey reveals not only the game’s title but its logo, which features what appears to be a ancient Grecian helmet under the typical Assassin’s symbol. This along with the game’s name, The Odyssey is of course a famous Greek epic, suggests that the game will move the setting from Ancient Egypt to Greece.
It’s true that nearly anyone could doctor a key chain and logo (although the leak does look very official). However, there’s more to this leak than just a little bit of merchandising. For starters, the end of the campaign for Assassin’s Creed: Origins (and its post game DLC) did heavily hint at a future Greece setting. Much of the later missions of Origins involve Bayek helping (or hunting) Greeks and Romans who have made their way across the sea to Egypt. It would be a very natural progression for Bayek and his burgeoning Brotherhood to return the favor and land on Grecian soil.
In addition, there’s also been rumors that a new Assassin’s Creed is on the way. A new title for the franchise was teased in the infamous Walmart leak that seemingly spoiled nearly every major announcement that will come during E3 2018.
There’s also been rumors on 4chan (via reddit) that the sequel to Origins was incoming and it would take place in Greece during the Flavian dynasty of the Roman Empire. If true this would mean that Bayek is (probably) no longer a major character as the Flavian dynasty began nearly a century after the close of Assassin’s Creed: Origins’ story. Of course Bayek could always appear in flashback.
Leaks and rumors such as this one should always be taken with a grain of salt but it would make sense if Ubisoft wanted to capitalize on the popularity of Origins and the goodwill it created. Even though the company previously claimed that a new Assassins Creed for 2018 was unlikely and they were just going to focus on DLCs for Origins. With that in mind Odyssey could be an expansion for Origins but from the sounds of it, if it is an expansion it’ll be a large expansion that will basically function as its own standalone game.
A followup to Assassin’s Creed: Origins is exciting news. Hopefully Odyssey, if does truly exist, won’t be another rush job that disappoints fans and critics alike.
