Arrow star Stephen Amell has responded to speculation of whether he would be open to returning as the Green Arrow after his show wraps next season. In March, the CW renewed Arrow along with fellow Arrowverse shows The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. However, unlike the others, Arrow’s renewal was for a shortened final season. The eighth and final season will consist of 10 episodes and conclude with the highly anticipated Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz has said that the event will span five shows, including upcoming new series Batwoman. It will also be broadcast over two quarters, making it their most ambitious crossover yet.
Amell’s not the only Arrow cast member fielding questions of whether they might return after the series concludes. Emily Bett Rickards, whose character Felicity departed ahead of the upcoming final season, has been asked the same question. However, in her case, most fans have speculated that Felicity might make another appearance before Arrow finishes its run. Her last episode, the season 7 finale, saw future Felicity leave with the Monitor, presumably to reunite with Oliver. However, present-day Felicity is continuing to live off-grid with daughter Mia, making it easier for her to potentially pop in for the series finale.
As reported by CBR, Amell discussed his future in the Arrowverse last weekend at MegaCon 2019 in Orlando. When asked about the possibility of returning after Arrow’s series finale, Amell responded:
Amell elaborated, “It’s a shitty idea that I’d say no. You do what you can. I owe a lot to people, so if they need something from me, they can always have it.” If it works out both story-wise and with Amell’s availability, there are certainly plenty of shows left he could show up on. He’s already guested on The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow for various crossovers and one-offs. He also interacted with Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, during last fall’s Elseworlds crossover that offered a first look at Gotham City.
“I owe so much to them. So, if five years from now they’re wrapping up Show X and they were like, ‘You know what would be the cherry on top of the sundae? Would you come back?’ What am I going to say? No?”
Oliver’s has already been a mentor figure and friend to Kara and especially Barry over the years. With Batwoman officially joining the Arrowverse in her own show this fall, it could be very organic for one former masked vigilante to offer advice to another. This could work especially well since Kate Kane will be at the start of her journey, while Oliver has certainly learned a lot of lessons during his seven years as the Green Arrow. Also, since the upcoming season is Batwoman’s first, it potentially has a long life ahead of it, meaning that there may be opportunities for Amell to guest star on it or other Arrowverse shows for many years to come.
