Arrow co-star David Ramsey, who plays John Diggle on the long-running CW series, promises fans will get answers to one of the show’s lingering mysteries: Diggle’s connection to the Green Lantern Corps. After an impressive eight-year run, Arrow is just days away from airing its series finale, but new comments from Ramsey could hint at bigger plans on the horizon for his character.
Additionally, Arrow has been drawing not-so-subtle connects between Diggle and another fan-favorite Green Lantern, John Stewart, since the previous crossover event “Elseworlds,” when a Flash from an alternate reality questioned why Diggle wasn’t wearing his “ring.” The Diggle/Stewart connection was further solidified later, when it was revealed that John Diggle’s stepfather is named Roy Stewart. Hinting at connections to the larger DC Comics mythos has been standard operating procedure for all of the Arrowverse shows since their inception (a tradition started way back in the pre-Arrowverse days of Smallville), and Arrowverse executive producer Greg Berlanti has consistently delivered on making sure those connections pay off. The arrival/existence of the Green Lantern has been hinted at over the years, but a recent on-screen appearance of Oa dramatically increased speculation that a much larger conclusion was on the horizon.
Now, with the Arrow series finale just days away from release, Ramsey confirmed that the show will address his character’s connection to the Corps in an interview with TVLine. “You are absolutely going to get your answers,” the actor teased, “We’ve been talking about this for years, and I think everyone by series’ end will be very happy.” That sounds like good news for Green Lantern fans who were already excited by the announcement that HBO Max (the cable channel’s upcoming streaming service) has greenlit a whole series focusing on the Green Lantern Corps from Berlanti. “I’ve talked to Greg about it,” says Ramsey of the new show, “and they have a great plan.”
Berlanti’s new series is still in the early stages of development, but HBO has already praised the new show as “unlike anything seen on television” and hinted that the focus will be on the origin story of “two major Green Lanterns on Earth.” Ramsey’s excitement about the new show could hint that the John Diggle/Stewart connection is exactly what fans suspect.
“People are champing at the bit to see this universe, to see this military corps come to live-action, and I’m among the people who are so excited,” the star explained. It’s certainly possible his excitement for the project comes from his love of the character, but it could also hint at a larger role his character could play on the new series. While it might seem far-fetched to think a CW series finale would serve as a tease for another network’s streaming service, it’s worth noting that CW, HBO and the DCTV universe are all owned by the same parent company.
Thankfully with Arrow’s series finale is set to air on Tuesday, January 28th, audiences don’t have to wait much longer to find out what secrets Berlanti and his team have in store for Diggle’s future. Ramsey certainly seems enthusiastic for a guy whose main acting gig just ended, but perhaps it’s because he knows he won’t be out of work for long.
